The extremely thin, fine and delicate skin around our eyes usually shows signs of fatigue and aging before other places on our bodies. With age, the skin around the eyes becomes even thinner making the underlying blood vessels and veins more apparent, which results in fine lines, wrinkles and darkening of the area. This thinness also means that this area cannot absorb a thick, heavily moisturizing face cream. The skin of the lips is almost as thin and delicate as that of the eyes. Unlike most of our body, our lips lack the protection of melanin pigment. A thin layer of skin covers the outside of our lips, while virtually transparent mucous membranes cover the inside. Lips lack the naturally hydrating, oil producing glands that the rest of our skin contains; therefore once moisture is leeched from the lips they have no natural way to replace this loss. (Saliva evaporates even faster than water, so licking your lips makes the problem of dry, cracking lips that much worse.) If your lips are undamaged, protect them from harm, and if your lips are already cracked or chapped, we recommend you moisturize them immediately.
